 Afrobeat was created in the 1960s by Nigerian musician and bandleader Fela Kuti. He blended elements of highlife, jazz, and funk music, and he incorporated social and political themes into his music. Afrobeat is known for its polyrhythmic, percussive style, and it's become popular all over the world. The popularity of Afrobeat really began to grow in the 1970s, and Fela Kuti became an international star. His music was political, and he was an outspoken critic of the Nigerian government. Fela Kuti also founded the Kalakuta Republic, which was a commune for his band and their families. There, they practiced communal living and self-sufficiency. Of course! In the 1980s, Fela Kuti's music began to incorporate more electronic elements, and his live performances became even more theatrical. At this time, he was also struggling with political repression and was arrested and imprisoned several times. In the 1990s, Fela Kuti's health began to decline, and he passed away in 1997. Well, there are a few artists who are considered the kings of Afrobeat right now. Burna Boy is often cited as the current king of Afrobeat, and he's won several awards and gained global recognition for his music. Rema is another artist who's making waves in the Afrobeat scene, and he's known for his unique sound and creative approach to music.
